With the debut of her latest single “Walk In Silence,” Emily Perry fearlessly unleashes a piece of her soul. It is an intimate and powerful song conveying a message that Emily wants to share with fans, as well as newcomers to her music. Like her prior recordings, Emily embraces her sultry and sassy side which offers an inviting sound irresistibly drawing in her audience. In an exclusive interview, Emily shares how “Walk In Silence” was created and some of the key lessons she has learned reaching for dream as a singer and performer.
What initially drew you into the world of song and performance?
EMILY: My music actually stemmed from my dance background. I’ve been a dancer since I was 3 years old and from there I became involved with singing. Dance is my way of expressing my thoughts and feelings, bringing those emotions out and giving them life through movement. My music is an extension of that. I started to really develop as an artist and plan for a career in the music industry during my teenage years. I couldn’t imagine doing anything different with my life!
What was the moment when you realized that you had finally made it as a performer?
EMILY: I think we’re always trying to make it. Continuously trying to better ourselves. Some key moments I’ve been especially proud of would have to be working with producers such as The Jackie Boys, Damon Elliot, Joe Cruz, Alius and Nathan Walters. Recording at Capitol Studios has definitely been a highlight. My recent Pre Grammy Soiree performance in New York was an incredible experience! It was my first time performing my newest single “Walk In Silence.” The whole night was incredible and the crowd was on fire! I think the true moment was when I released my very first single “Sugarcoated” produced by ALIUS. I’ve been writing music since I was younger but to actually have it produced and put out there for the world to hear is a truly incredible feeling. I am so humbled by all these experiences I’ve been given and cannot wait to see the opportunities that come my way this year.
How would you describe your style of music?
EMILY: As an artist I would describe myself as current, relatable and hopefully inspirational. Passionate too! I think music is all about passion. My goal is to make people feel something. I want them to be able to vibe out and relate lyrically when listening to my music. I like to think I have a unique tone that translates across different genres, which is really cool because I love so many different genres! Ultimately I want my music to reach each individual listening. I want to create all different kinds of music. I want my music to grow with me.
What continues to be your source of inspiration in your music?
EMILY: I am constantly inspired by everything I see, feel and experience. Besides that I love to be inspired by other artists.
Is there a story behind your new song “Walk In Silence”? What was the inspiration to write it?
EMILY: “Walk In Silence” is my newest single release. I am so thankful for the response it has already received! I wrote this song with one of a kind producers, Joe Cruz and Cindy Valentine. “Walk in Silence” has a mid tempo, contemporary pop vibe. Lyrically this song means a lot to me. I think this song is very prominent with everything going on in our industry today. We all put a piece of our personal feelings into it. I pulled a line or two out of my songbook with this one. I was 11 the first time I started using a writing journal. Now I have stacks and stacks of them. I have songs in these books from years ago and songs from yesterday. Everything I’ve ever felt or thought or seen, I’ve written down. I carry one of my songbooks with me everywhere I go. Most of the time you think of something in the most unlikely situation. You might not even understand what it really means until you come across it later but when you originally wrote it down, it clearly meant something to you. From that you can create special music.
Then what inspired you to write your song “Boom”?
EMILY: I wrote BOOM with legendary producers the Jackie Boyz, Cindy Valentine and The Furthur. A collaborative writing session like this really is quite beautiful. Everyone’s adrenaline is up, ideas are flowing and you all just come together to create something really magical. The second I heard the track I was so pumped. It had a juicy vibe that I loved and that I couldn’t wait to start writing to. When writing BOOM we were really describing a feeling … a feeling of love, power, energy and fun.
What would you say is the theme of your upcoming album? And is there a tentative release timeframe yet?
EMILY: This will be my first full-length album release. I’ve been working on this album for a while now. With it being my first, I’m working hard to make sure it’s the best possible representation of my music. I’ve learned a lot and grown a lot throughout the creation of this album. It was also so so much fun! The process has been so incredible and I can’t wait until it’s finally out there for everyone to hear. No firm date has been set but the album will premiere later this year. As for a title – there are a couple ideas we are tossing around but the final decision will be a surprise!
What do you think you have learned from your professional journey so far?
EMILY: As corny as it is, I have learned to never give up. It doesn’t just happen. You don’t get it handed to you. It takes time and a whole lot of work. You could be inches away from an opportunity, you could either give up before you get that chance, or you could keep fighting for it. And yes it’s hard and it kills your self-esteem sometimes but it is purely mind over matter. Have the right work ethic and the right attitude and eventually it will pay off. You also have to acknowledge the small victories. It’s not going to happen overnight. You don’t go from 0-100 in five minutes. So make sure to pat yourself on the back for the small but great experiences that come your way.
Are there any cool perks of where you are in your career right now?
EMILY: I am traveling quite a bit at the moment and am loving every second. I plan to do a lot more of it this year!
Has there been any great advice you have gotten?
EMILY: This advice is very simple but it is the truest advice I’ve ever gotten: Work hard. Simple as that. Nothing is going to be handed to you. You have to want it, and you have to go out and fight for it.
What advice would you offer to other upcoming and aspiring singers/performers?
EMILY: This is a very competitive industry, however, I don’t see that as a reason to not try. I think it’s important to try things and while you’re doing this, it’s helpful to have a support system around you. There’s a lot of influence in this industry so its key to have people around you who care about you and people who are going to have your best interest at heart. At the end of the day, you know what’s best for you. You have a team that you trust to guide you, help you make decisions, bring out the best in you but you have a good head on your shoulders and you know what’s right for you. Trust yourself. You need to like yourself as an artist before anyone else is going to.
What do you consider to be one of your proudest accomplishments as a singer/performer?
EMILY: I think hitting #9 on the Billboard Dance Charts was a big moment. I was so grateful and so humbled by the news. I’d been working my way up that chart for months and to hit top 10 was an incredible feeling. I am proud of all the music I’ve put out so far. However I’m excited to release some of the music I have tucked up my sleeve.
You recently performed at THE SOIREE in New York City. What was that experience like?
EMILY: I absolutely loved my time in New York! The Soiree was an amazing experience and a night full of incredible music. To have performed in front of such a great crowd, in one of New York’s most famous venues was such an honor especially as it was my first time performing my newest single. The crowd was absolutely killer! All the energy I gave to them, they threw right back at me. Footage and photos will be coming soon on my website as well as on all social media outlets.
Do you have any other upcoming projects that you can share that fans should keep an eye out for?
EMILY: Yes! As discussed earlier, my album will be dropping this year so keep an eye out for that! However before that, I will be filming and releasing my newest visual for “Walk In Silence”.
Are you actively involved with any charities? Which charity do you work with most? And which would like to see your fans become more involved with and support?
EMILY: Recently, I have just begun working with The Art of Elysium. I got involved with the Art of Elysium because I get so much joy from music and dance that I wanted to share that joy with others. I have so much respect for everything this organization has to offer. I am loving it so far and cannot wait to continue working with them.
At a time when women’s voices are rising to be heard and respected around the country and world, what do you recommend your fans do to lend support in that endeavor?
EMILY: Be respectful of everyone regardless of gender, race or religion and raise up the people in your life … every one of us should strive to be the best version of ourselves and we should give a helping hand to others to do the same. So to answer your question, respect women, stand up for the women in your life and encourage the women you know to be courageous.
What do you recommend your fans get involved with in order to further support musical artists?
EMILY: You can support your favorite artists by following them on social media, interacting with them, encouraging them, streaming or buying their music legally (ha), going to their shows and supporting the causes they care about to amplify their efforts to help others. One of the most important things to an artist is their fans. We are so grateful to the fans that support us everyday and we want to get to know you better! I for one am very interactive on my social media because I have so much respect for my fans.
Where can fans find out more about you and your music?
EMILY: You can keep up with everything I’m doing on all social media at @theemilyperry as well as on my website at: www.emilyperry.me.
As Emily’s career flourishes and grows, be sure to celebrate with her by following along and see what comes next in her amazing journey. In the meantime, be sure to check out the release of her latest single:
