When I think back to my review of True Blood last season, I said that the “positive outweighed the negative”, but upon trying to go beyond the first episodes, I had to stop. I couldn’t take how seriously the show was taking itself, trying to be a wistful drama, with a few shape-shifters and vampires milling about. At the suggestion of a friend, I gave season 1 another chance, and by the end of episode 12 (and because of both Lizzy Caplan’s and Michelle Forbes’ brilliance), I could not believe how excited I was to see what they can possibly do for Season 2. The show started embracing its absurdity, introduced characters I could really get into, and suddenly, I’m hooked.
By the end of last season, the killer who was setting up Sookie’s brother Jason had been unmasked, and it was a crushing blow to realize it was (spoiler alert) Rene. I didn’t even think to suspect him, and suddenly he was this terrible, vengeful murderer, trying to kill Sookie. Just when you thought season 1 would come to a tidy little happy ending, Sookie and Tara find a leg dangling from the backseat of local cop Andy’s car.
The Season 2 premiere picks up right where Season 1 left off, with Tara and Sookie screaming at what they’ve found. From there, the story takes off, and with it comes another murder mystery, while the show investigates just what the heck is going on with Sam and Marianne (and Tara and her new boyfriend), Jason’s involvement with the Lord, Bill’s new “daughter” Jessica, and of course, the love story of (real life couple Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer) Sookie and Bill.
The first episode packs so many “what the frak” moments, and really sets the course for a crazy second season. Do yourself a favor, and check it out!
The True Blood Season 2 Premiere Airs Sunday, June 14th On HBO 9PM EST
