The return of True Blood wastes no time. The episode picks up right where the previous season left off. Within seconds of the show’s return, Sookie Stackhouse runs out of the restaurant, moments after Bill proposed and then disappeared.
The events following Marianne’s big party are still reverberating through Bon Temps. Eggs is dead and Tara is distraught with only her cousin Lafayette to comfort her. Jason is beside himself having been the one to kill Eggs, so he and Andy must concoct a story to cover the truth.
And then there’s Jessica. She’s drained a man, just as she discovers Hoyt still loves her. That’s a problem, and not just because Hoyt might not like that she went out with another man.
Meanwhile, the proliferation of V has become apparent to the Magistrate. This makes things a little uncomfortable for Erik, who has been the Queen’s right hand vampire, directly responsible for the increase in the V trade.
There’s a lot going on, plenty to whet fans’ appetites for the coming season, for certain. Lots of sex, violence and vampires kick off the season. The show has always had a flair for the dramatic, and this season appears to be no different.
Alan Ball’s adaptation of Charlaine Harris’s bestselling books continues to find ways to shock and awe. We’re used to the sexually charged, violent nature of the show, but things are certainly moving even further in that direction this year. One thing is clear: this show is equal opportunity for eye candy, with plenty of male nudity to go around.
For those who have had enough of sparkly vampires and emo werewolves, True Blood has an alternative for you. The war between the two creatures is very much the same, but the battlefield and type of warfare is different and promises to be an important part of the story this year. The allure of the show has always been its blend of drama, gore and humor. Last season may have tipped too far to the ridiculous, which means this season should hopefully bring us back to the dark and sinister qualities of the first season without losing the fun that saturated season 2 (I don’t know about you, but for me there is such a thing as ‘too many orgies.’)
If you are a fan of the series already, I don’t need to tell you to tune in to tonight’s season premiere. If you haven’t watched the show before, be warned that it doesn’t spend much time recapping previous events. This could make for some confusion if this is your introduction to the show. Besides, “True Blood” is most fun once you have a handle on all of the characters and their quirks. While vampires, shapeshifters and werewolves are fun, the real enjoyment is spending some time with Sookie, Bill and the residents of Bon Temps.
