From a producer of The Passion of the Christ comes The Stoning of Soraya M., the chilling true story of a deadly conspiracy that became a shameful cover-up…until one witness refused to be silent. Starring Academy Award® nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Sand and Fog, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, 2003) and Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ), the film is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by French journalist Freidoune Sahebjam. Described as “riveting” (Leonard Maltin), “unforgettable” (Hollywood.com) and “a magnificent movie” (The Huffington Post), The Stoning of Soraya M. also gained notoriety in Iran, where the film was banned. Both a classic fable of good and evil and an inspiring tribute to the many fighting against injustice all around the world, The Stoning of Soraya M. earned the runner-up to the Audience Favorite Award (behind Slumdog Millionaire) at the Toronto Film Festival and has been nominated for three Golden Satellite Awards (Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress). It will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on March 9, 2010.
When a journalist (Caviezel) is stranded in a remote Iranian village, he meets a bold woman named Zahra (Aghdashloo) who takes a big chance to reveal what the villagers will stop at nothing to hide. Thus begins the story of Soraya (Mozhan Marnò), a kind woman whose cruel, divorce-seeking husband trumps up false charges of infidelity against her, which carry an unimaginable penalty. Soraya and Zahra attempt to navigate the villagers’ scheming, lies and deceit to prove her innocence. But when all else fails, Zahra must risk everything to use the only weapon she has left – her voice – to share Soraya’s shocking story with the world.
