The Secret Life of the American Teenager

ABC Family’s record breaking The Secret Life of the American Teenager packs a cliché a minute, in the follow up television series by 7th Heaven creator Brenda Hampton. The story of young Amy Juergens (Shailene Woodley), a naïve French horn player, who inadvertently gets pregnant after having sex the first time (of course), while away at band camp, TSLOTAT follows her through the ups and downs of teenage pregnancy. Along the way, she meets and falls in love with Ben, the son of the Sausage King and the sweetest boy in the world. While she tries to keep her pregnancy from her friends and family, as with all secrets, eventually it comes out. She tells her best friends Madison and Lauren, who inadvertently tell Ben’s best friends Harry (typical nerdy and unconfident Asian boy) and Alice (generalized sex-stat-spouting genius Asian girl) who eventually tell Ricky (the baby’s father, man whore) and Adrian (the stereotypical trampy high school girl, who happens to be a twirler in the band). Grace (the bible-reading good girl) and Jack (the horny jock) find out. Oh and Amy’s sister, Ashley, is there, too, morosely working her way through the part. There are also adult stories going on, too, but they act more childish than the teens. Amy’s parents hate each other (one of whom is Molly Ringwald), and Grace’s parents are preachy.

All in all, it’s a family show that is, at best, lukewarm, creatively speaking. The writing is simple and the storylines aren’t groundbreaking. Also, the acting is forced. Aside from scenes featuring Molly Ringwald and Shailene Woodley together, everything feels like acting class 101. It’s the kind of show, not unlike 7th Heaven, that you almost feel the need to watch, just to see what they’ll come up with next.
