    Broadway’s longest-running production of all time celebrates a triumphant quarter century on stage with THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL, coming to Blu-ray – with perfect hi-def picture and perfect hi-def sound – DVD, On Demand and Digital Download on February 7, 2012 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment.  On October 2, 2011, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh marked the 25th anniversary of their beloved musical extravaganza, “The Phantom of the Opera,” with a lavishly staged production at London’s legendary Royal Albert Hall that was beamed live via satellite to cinemas across the globe. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL, marks the first time a live performance of the blockbuster musical has been made available for home viewing, making it a must-have anniversary release for fans everywhere.

    Since Phantom of the Opera is one of the most recognized and successful musicals around, it’s no surprise that it has a long list of awards under its belt. In honor of the release of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL on Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand on February 7, we’ll list the many awards Phantom has been presented with including a Tony award for best musical and an Olivier award for most popular musical!

    LAURENCE OLIVIER AWARDS

    The original London production of Phantom of the Opera not only won prestigious Laurence Olivier Awards in its original run in 1986, but also won a Most Popular Show award in 2002! In 1986, the West End production was honored with both the Best New Musical award, as well as the award for Best Actor in a Musical, which was given to the incomparable Michael Crawford for his portrayal of the Phantom. Additionally, acclaimed stage designer, Maria Björnson, was nominated for the Designer of the Year award for her work on the production.

    DRAMA DESK AWARDS

    The original Broadway production of Phantom was nominated for an outstanding nine Drama Desk Awards, and took home seven of those in 1988. Michael Crawford won for Outstanding Actor in a Musical, Harold Prince was honored with the Outstanding Director of a Musical award, Andrew Lloyd Webber won for Outstanding Music, David Cullen and Andrew Lloyd Webber took home the award for Outstanding Orchestrations, Maria Björnson won awards for both Outstanding Set Design and Outstanding Costume Design, and Andrew Bridge was awarded with Outstanding Lighting Design. The production was also nominated for Outstanding Musical, and Sarah Brightman (Christine) was nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Musical.

    TONY AWARDS

    1988 was a good year for the Broadway production of Phantom. Not only did they take home seven Drama Desk Awards, but they were also nominated for an amazing ten Tony Awards! The production won seven awards, including Best Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical (Michael Crawford), Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical (Judy Kaye), Best Direction of a Musical (Harold Prince), Best Scenic Design and Best Costume Design (both awards went to Maria Björnson), and Best Lighting Design (Andrew Bridge). Phantom is one of only seven productions in the history of the Tony Awards to sweep the Creative Arts categories. The show was also nominated for Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Choreography.
