The end of LOST opened up a spot on a lot of people’s “obsessions” list. THE EVENT wants to take its place…and it just might.

What’s unique and possibly detrimental about the show is its unorthodox storytelling method. Everything unfolds through multiple points of view and a shifting time line. It’s a great way to get a more in depth view of everything going on and show otherwise hidden aspects of characters but, if the writers aren’t ever-vigilant or get trapped by the format, it could get very messy very quickly. If they maintain or exceed the bar set by the pilot, NBC will have something epic on their airwaves.

The pilot introduces us to the primary players at the center of this saga – Sean Walker (Jason Ritter – PARENTHOOD, W., JOAN OF ARCADIA), a regular guy who’s girlfriend disappears while on a cruise; President Elias Martinez (Blair Underwood – THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE, DIRTY SEXY MONEY, L.A. LAW) who was tipped off about a group of mysterious CIA detainees that he plans on freeing; and Sophia Maguire (Laura Innes – ER, THE LOUIE SHOW) the leader of the detainees who’ll be introduced to the American public at a massive press conference.

There are a lot more charcters involved of course like Sean’s kidnapped girlfriend Leila Buchanan (Sarah Roemer – DISTURBIA, THE GRUDGE 2) and her family, the unlikable head of the CIA Blake Sterling (Zeljko Ivanek – DAMAGES, TRUE BLOOD, 24), and a seemingly innocuous couple Sean and Leila meet on vacation. But the most intriguing to me is Simon Lee (Ian Anthony Dale – THE HANGOVER, DAY BREAK, MORTAL KOMBAT: REBIRTH). He’s an agent of some kind who serves as a liaison between Sophia and the “outside world” but there’s more to him than that and I can’t wait to find out exactly what.

So what is this “event” the show’s named after? Well, I don’t know because they didn’t say. But something big happens in the last thirty or so seconds and it’s surprising, intriguing, and pretty darn cool (which I’m sure is what they’re going for). It’s also a solid payoff to the tension they’d built up and may even illicit a “What?!?” from some folks.

I was only mildly interested in the series but after seeing the pilot, you can count me in. If you’re into mysteries, conspiracy thrillers, and/or strong ensemble casts, you need to check THE EVENT out.

The Event Series Premiere : Monday, September 20th : 9/8c on NBC
