THE CLOSER’s eagerly anticipated fourth season starts in July.
“With fans eagerly awaiting THE CLOSER’s return, we thought it was a perfect opportunity to take them behind the scenes and show how the intricate plots and character details are developed by the writers,” said Molly Battin, senior vice president of brand development and digital platforms for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies. “This is also a great chance for fans to get a sneak preview at what they can expect when THE CLOSER returns to TNT in July.”
In these new, online segments, THE CLOSER’s executive producers and writers take viewers through the process of putting a season together, beginning with the development of the season’s main theme. This includes discussions with THE CLOSER’s Golden Globe®-winning star and producer Kyra Sedgwick, who helps writers determine what rites of passage her character will face in the coming season.
Once the season’s theme is developed, writers brainstorm different cases and plots, as well as opportunities for specific characters, such as the ever-popular detectives Flynn and Provenza. Next up is “breaking a story,” which involves developing a specific episode’s plot and filling it in with the twists, turns and character arcs needed for a full show.

TNT’s award-winning drama stars Sedgwick as CIA-trained Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, a former Atlanta detective brought to Los Angeles to head a special LAPD unit charged with cracking sensitive, high-profile murder cases. This top-notch investigator is highly skilled at diving into a case, leaving no stone unturned as she pinpoints a suspect and draws a confession. Sedgwick is joined on THE CLOSER by the show’s two-time, Screen Actors Guild Award®-nominated ensemble cast: Jon Tenney, J.K. Simmons, Corey Reynolds, Robert Gossett, G.W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Raymond Cruz, Michael Paul Chan and Gina Ravera.
THE CLOSER has amazed the cable industry with its ability to build its audience each season. THE CLOSER started its third season last year with ad-supported cable’s largest audience ever for a scripted series telecast, a record the show had previously set with the prior two seasons’ premieres. THE CLOSER broke that record yet again when it drew nearly 10 million viewers for its summer finale last September.
