Sweeney Todd DVD Review

Do I think Johnny Depp is the greatest singer in the world? Probably not, but he really holds his own in the big screen version of Sondheim’s brilliant and dark musical. Helena Bonham Carter is delightful as his cooky downstairs neighbor Mrs. Lovett, who holds a torch for the demon barber and whose singing is pretty darn good. You have to wonder how many times she’s going to let real-life hubby Tim Burton tell her to wear her hair in a horrible mess on her head before she bakes him in a meat pie. Johnny Depp is always great in a dark and scary role like this. The direction is typical of Tim Burton – possibly to a fault, where it’s not as original as it could have been, but it’s nothing you don’t expect. The over-done-ness of the blood and gore is campy and I think a perfect addition to making us realize just how full of anger and vengeance the title character really is. The supporting cast is great too – Alan Rickman, Sacha Baron Cohen, and newcomer Jamie Campbell Bower really shine in their widely different roles.
