The CW’s Supernatural embraced its dark fairy tale roots with Season 3 Episode 5 (S3E5 / 3×05), “Bedtime Stories.”Originally airing on November 1, 2007, the episode sends Sam and Dean Winchester to a quiet small town where a string of gruesome murders appears to be inspired by classic fairy tales, including Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Hansel and Gretel, and The Three Little Pigs. As the brothers investigate the bizarre deaths, they discover that someone is turning childhood stories into deadly reality.
Written by Cathryn Humphris and directed by Mike Rohl, “Bedtime Stories” blends supernatural horror with fantasy, creating one of the series’ most imaginative monster-of-the-week episodes. While Sam and Dean race to stop the mysterious killings, Sam also takes a major step in the season-long storyline by confronting the Crossroads Demon in a desperate attempt to save Dean from his demon deal. That emotional subplot gives the episode added weight, tying an inventive standalone mystery into the larger mythology of Season 3.
Alongside series stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, the episode features Sandra McCoy as the Crossroads Demon, as well as early appearances from Tracy Spiridakos and Patrick Gilmore. Mixing eerie fairy tale imagery, memorable humor, and important mythology developments, “Bedtime Stories” remains one of the most distinctive episodes of Supernatural’s third season.
