SONS OF ANARCHY Season 3 Preview

Sons Of Anarchy Jax

SAMCRO is back and the boys are pissed.  Jax’s son Abel has been kidnapped, matriarch Gemma is on the run for a murder she didn’t commit (and one she did).   The Prospect, Half-Sack is dead, shot during Abel’s kidnapping.  These events are recapped pretty quickly in the first few minutes of the third season premiere of “Sons of Anarchy” and if you think that’s the limit of the story threads for the club this season, you don’t know this show.

The third season picks up within a day or so of these monumental events at the end of season two.  Gemma (Katey Sagal) is hiding out, trying to avoid the cops, the ATF, the FBI, and pretty much every law enforcement agent in the tri-state area while Clay (Ron Perlman) rounds up the boys and starts the manhunt for Abel’s kidnapper.  As an indicator for the tone of the season, the premiere is intense and riveting.  The kidnapping story would seemingly be quite enough to fill the hour, but Kurt Sutter and his writers aren’t content to play out one major story without following a few other threads.  By the end of the hour, the town of Charming faces great change, and not just because Jacob Hale is running for office and needs the new Chief of Police, his brother David Hale, to support him in the race.

In less capable hands the multiple storylines would play out far less cogently, but Sutter handles them all deftly, making sure to let all of the leads shine in their moment.  In particular, the criminally overlooked Sagal shares a few moments with Hal Holbrook playing Gemma’s father.  They don’t have a lot to say between them, but the words they exchange and the emotions behind them resonate strongly.  Even the Mama Bear needs her daddy, in her time of crisis.

Charlie Hunnam as Jax probably has the toughest job ahead this season as he struggles with not only the kidnapping of Abel but also the very future of the club.  “We represent the past, present and future of this club,” Clay intones, warning Jax that their every move and reaction is subject to scrutiny by SAMCRO.  Many of the club members remember how Jax’s father John Teller fell apart after the death of his second son, and will be looking for Jax to show them he is capable of filling his late father’s (and eventually Clay’s) shoes as their leader.

The premiere contains several great showdowns between characters and a few surprises.  To say much more would be saying too much.  Even if you are new to “Sons of Anarchy” don’t feel intimidated about jumping into the show at this point.  You may have a small bit of confusion due to some backstory covered in the previous two seasons, but the action and drama of the premiere are so addicting you’ll forget the questions you have and will want to keep watching one of the best shows on television.

“Sons of Anarchy” third season premiere airs Tuesday, September 7 at 10 PM Eastern/Pacific on FX.
