Wishing We Had More H.R.G. In The First Hour
We learn a lot in the first hour (NBC did not send out the second hour for review). We now know who shot Nathan Petrelli. I’m still not sure I understand the explanation given, but I think we’re set up for an interesting exploration of the story. The Ando and Hiro scenes were brilliant. I didn’t realize how much I missed these two together, but seeing them back in action was just fantastic. I like the new flash-like character played by Brea Grant (Jean from Friday Night Lights). She’s got a good chemistry with Masi Oka. And there is only so many words that could describe the awesome Christine Rose (Mama Petrelli). She’s the fiercest of all fierce. Before we met the terrible twins from last season, my least favorite character was Clairebear. So far in the first hour, and after her brilliant tête-à-tête with the divine Zachary Quinto, she’s moved up to very near the top of my favorite list. Already serving more of a purpose after he was woefully underused last season, Quinto as Sylar is the creepiest villain on TV. I wish we had more Horn-Rimmed Glasses in the first hour, but I’m sure we’ll see bunches of him for the rest of the season, because Jack Coleman rocks!
There are parts of the show that I still don’t get, like why is Maya still around? The least interesting character addition from last year, she’s still around, talking to Suresh. I don’t want to give anything away, but Ali Larter is still a member of the cast and still doesn’t know what on earth to do when the camera is on her. And I don’t like the plot contrivance, er, twist involving Suresh. Hopefully it will play out in a very interesting and exciting fashion, but I’m skeptical.
All in all, a good episode. It’s not the best thing I’ve seen this fall, but it sets up what should be a much better season of this show.
