RESCUE ME: Denis Leary as Tommy Gavin. RESCUE ME premieres Tuesday April 7 (10:00-11:00 PM ET/PT) on FX. CR: FX
Rescue Me has not aired a new episode in 18 months. To say it was worth the wait is an understatement. After a shaky 4th season that had the writing and the characters go off the rails, with no real end in sight, the time off has given our group the chance to redirect the stories so that they all make sense (as much as they can in the world of Tommy Gavin) and the premiere felt in many ways like a second pilot, a perfect re-introduction to the team.
If you can remember back to season 4, Tommy’s dad died at a baseball game. This season is all about Tommy recovering from that and continuing to struggle with his sobriety and the sobriety of his family in general (Micky and Teddy are struggling the most, and it’s heartbreaking). And there’s also that little problem he had with the Captain thinking he’s crazy, and trying to get him transferred or kicked out, or desked. As always, Tommy’s dealing with women of all kinds, mostly of the crazy variety (curses, Sheila….the only weak link, if I’m being honest). The guest stars this season are fantastic, Michael J. Fox especially, as Janet’s newest boyfriend.
As for the rest of the house, Mike, Sean, and Franco decide to open a bar with the inheritance from Mikey’s mom. Sean faces some issues this season that will bring his mom and brother to town, and Lou is dealing with his own issues (including the reappearance of an old flame).
A show that started as an immediate and guttural reaction to the events of 9/11, this season brings that memory back to the forefront, while the group is helping a French journalist with their reactions and their memories. It grounds the episodes in more reality and got me even more invested than I already was. Maybe it’s just been a long time, but the return of Rescue Me is fantastic and worth tuning in!
The Rescue Me Season Premiere Airs On FX Tuesday, April 7th at 10:00PM EST.
