After the intense Season 5 finale, PSYCH kicks off the new season with a bit more light-hearted fair in “Shawn Rescues Darth Vader.”
While infiltrating an Ambassador’s house to retrieve a collectible, Shawn Spencer (James Roday) discovers a dead body and must rally the police to investigate without revealing he’d been there. Meanwhile, he and Juliet O’Hara (Maggie Lawson) feel the pressure of their (mostly) secret relationship and some big reveals are made. The glorious guest star roster immediately gets two more additions with the ever-lovely Polly Walker (CAPRICA, ROME, CLASH OF THE TITANS) and legendary Malcolm McDowell.
Of course we get the main personal plotlines established in this stand-alone mystery – the big focus clearly will be how Shawn and Juliet’s relationship will be challenged by working together and how it affects those around them. As Juliet’s partner (and not a fan of Shawn), we see how Lassiter reacts to it immediately. Timothy Omundson really nails his scenes this episode, every reaction is pitch perfect. Another obstacle that plays out will be how Juliet will deal with Shawn’s unusual methods and rule breaking. Considering how much of what Shawn does is probably illegal, it’ll definitely test her loyalties.
The other major question will be whether this will be the season that Shawn’s giant scam will be discovered and what his father Henry (Corbin Bernsen), now working as a liaison with the police department, will do to help him. I think this is the more interesting of the two as it will potentially allow Bernsen to really stretch his acting chops as we see Henry wrestle with decisions he never thought he’d have to make.
Despite providing some of my favorite moments, as usual, there sadly wasn’t much Gus (Dule Hill) action this episode. Which, now that I think about it, seems to be business as usual for their season premieres. Hopefully we’ll get some juicy story-lines for him this season because Gus is like a cowbell – we need more.
“Psych” premieres on USA Network on Wednesday, October 12th at 10 PM Eastern/Pacific.
