Party Down

Like the other pay networks before it, Starz is trying to carve out a little niche for itself with gritty dramas and fantastic comedies, and tonight, they hit it out of the park with a brand new series from the brilliant and insane minds of John Enbom, Paul Rudd, Rob Thomas, and Dan Etheridge (3 of the 4 are the minds behind Veronica Mars) called Party Down.  The trials and tribulations of a merry band of cater-waiters who are all trying to make it (or who have tried and failed to make it) in the world of Hollywood.  Writers, actors, comediennes, you name it, they’re catering and it is some of the funniest stuff I have seen in a long time.

The show stars some of my favorite working actors:  Lizzy Caplan (Mean Girls, True Blood), Adam Scott (that teacher-touched-me episode of Veronica Mars in Season 1), Jane Lynch (just about everything, most notably for me, A Mighty Wind), Ryan Hansen (Veronica Mars), Ken Marino (VM alum, also from Wet Hot American Summer, one of the best movies ever), and Martin Starr (Freaks and Geeks, among others).  Set among the back drop of elaborate parties (a singles’ mixer, a young Republicans’ party, after an Adult DVD awards show), these characters, who have formed a great bond, work together at their “side job,” while trying to make it.

The show is fast paced, funny, smart. A great cast is nothing without great words to say, and the writing is top notch!  Aside from the cast and the writers, there are some fantastic guest stars, starting in the premiere tonight with Enrico Colantoni (be prepared to see him in an all new light), and continuing with other VM alums Jason Dohring, Alona Tal, Ed Begley, Jr., Ryan Devlin, James Jordon, and some other familiar faces – JK Simmons (Juno), Eden Sher (gone-too-soon Sons and Daughters on ABC), Joey Lauren Adams (so much stuff), and Josh Gad (Back to You).

On more than one occasion after watching the episodes made available for review, I’ve declared my love for this show – it is definitely worth tuning in and seeing for yourself the crazy situations these guys get themselves into!

The Party Down Series Premiere Airs On Starz Friday, March 20th at 10:30PM EST.
