The denizens of Paddy’s Pub in the City of Brotherly Love are the kind of people you’d go out of your way to avoid in real life, but on TV they are just the kind of odious, obnoxious examples of human depravity you want to see for 22 minutes every week.

The denizens of Paddy’s Pub in the City of Brotherly Love are the kind of people you’d go out of your way to avoid in real life, but on TV they are just the kind of odious, obnoxious examples of human depravity you want to see for 22 minutes every week.

“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” has been away too long and, if like me, you missed the creators of Kitten Mittens, Dicktowels, and the Nightman Cometh, you’ll be glad to have them back too.  Dennis, Sweet Dee, Mac, Charlie and Frank (and the assorted colorful recurring characters) are back.  The big difference this season – well, there’s a couple.  At first glance, it would seem the gang is growing up, especially once you see the episode titles ahead this season.  Of course, this being ‘Sunny’ a few minutes into the 6th season premiere make it very clear that there is no growth or enlightenment for these people.  They are just as oblivious to their own twisted reality as ever.

The show has always tackled hot button issues, usually with insane results.  In the season premiere, a character familiar to fans of the show returns, forcing Mac to face his feelings about gay marriage.  Once he decides he’s against it, he makes it his mission to prove to everyone how bad it is, by using whatever ammunition he can find, starting with the Bible.  Usually there’s a domino effect with this gang – one or more of the gang mentions something, and they all get involved.  Charlie and Frank, who have long been roommates, discuss their living situation in the context of Mac’s crusade.  Dennis decides he wants to be married, and goes about trying to make that happen.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia Season 6

IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA: L-R: Danny DeVito, Charlie Day and Katlin Olson on the season 6 premiere of IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA airing Thursday, September 16, 10 PM E/P on FX: CR: Patrick McElhenney / FX

As with past seasons, the writing and improv skills are as good as they’ve ever been.  Very often the show benefits from multiple viewings of episodes, and the first four do have some moments that will be noted as highlights (or, perhaps more fittingly, lowlights) of the series.  The episode where the gang buys a boat (episode three this season) is a classic, perfectly illustrating the disastrous results of previous escapades, even as some of the other episodes seem to be moving the gang in new and interesting directions.

Because I feel it’s best to see these episodes with a minimal number of preconceptions, I am purposely avoiding episode titles and too many details regarding the exploits of the gang.  By episode four, a big mystery hangs over the gang, though how it will affect them has yet to be seen (and, in this case, I’ll provide a hint – Kaitin Olson recently gave birth.  You do the math.)

“Sunny” has set a standard for absurdist comedy that even Comedy Central couldn’t touch in original scripted programming.  Thankfully, from the crazy origin story of the show (they shot the pilot and sent it to FX, which isn’t exactly a common practice nor a notably successful method of getting a show sold to a network) the gang is still here, delivering crazy moments that leave you wondering how on Earth they’ll top it next week.  Fortunately for us, they continue to deliver, and I look forward to seeing just how that happens every week this fall.

“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” premieres for season six on Thursday September 16 at 10 PM Eastern/Pacific.
