CBS is the land of cop shows. They’ve got three CSIs, two NCISes, FLAHSPOINT, CRIMINAL MINDS, THE MENTALIST, the new HAWAII FIVE-0 and now, debuting September 24th, BLUE BLOODS. Despite many categorical similarities, BLUE BLOODS is very different from the rest of their procedural slate for one major reason – they keep it in the family.
The series centers around three generations of the Reagan family in New York, the members of which are all police officers save Erin (Bridget Moynahan – I, ROBOT, ELI STONE) who is an Assistant District Attorney. We’re introduced to the Reagans on the day Jamie (Will Estes – AMERICAN DREAMS, U-571, REUNION), the youngest, graduates from the academy while Danny (Donnie Wahlberg – RIZZOLI & ISLES, BOOMTOWN), a detective, is tasked to solve a kidnapping case.

Tom Selleck, who twenty years removed from MAGNUM P.I. is still working that mustache like nobody’s business, plays patriarch/Police Commissioner Frank Reagan and turns in an excellent performance. Frank is all the things you’d expect him to be – authoritative, principled, determined, perceptive – but quietly so.
Estes is given a lot to do in the pilot and does a great job of expressing the inner emotions of Jamie in a natural way, something not all actors can do. It helps draw an audience in when they can tell something is up with a character the same way the people closest to him can. But the real stand-out in the pilot is Wahlberg who often doesn’t get the acting props he deserves. If the writers develop Danny the way I think they’re going to, don’t be surprised if Wahlberg gets an Emmy nomination soon.
Rounding out the primary cast is Len Cariou (DAMAGES, 1408) who plays former Commissioner, old-school cop, and grand-patriarch Henry Reagan and Flex Alexander (SNAKES ON A PLANE, ONE ON ONE) as Danny’s partner Detective Demarcus – both having few scenes in the pilot I saw.
While it’s easy to just say “it’s LAW & ORDER: Reagan Family!” as a toss away description, BLUE BLOODS rises above that by making the Reagans the center of the stories and depicting how their jobs affect their lives as opposed to it being all about the cases. Yes, we’ll see inside the police station and the DA’s office but only briefly. If the scripts keep delivering, this cast will knock it out of the park.
Blue Bloods Series Premiere : Friday, September 24th : 10/9c on CBS
