Discovery Channel is amping up one of its biggest hits and moving it to the auto capital of the world Detroit, Michigan. MG: MOTOR CITY will feature a gritty pair of top-notch bike designers and builders, known around the world as innovators and artists. Together they will lead a dream team of fabricators, mechanics and welders on a mission. With only seven days and $3,000, they will redefine ingenuity under pressure, a hallmark of Discovery Channel programming, and turn average vehicles into outrageous contraptions of fantasy and function. The pressure is intense and the stakes are high as both pride and prizes are on the line. MG: MOTOR CITY will premiere on Discovery Channel this fall.
“Showcasing creativity, determination and ingenuity under pressure is what Discovery does best and this series is no exception,” said John Ford, Discovery Channel President and General Manager. “Taking the show to the birthplace of the automotive industry makes perfect sense and we can’t wait to see what amazing dream machines the team constructs.”
“It’s a terrific opportunity for our series to hire local workers and showcase the talented people of Detroit who have made the Motor City a nationwide automotive legend,” said Thom Beers, CEO & Executive Producer of Original Productions.
The original MONSTER GARAGE series, which aired on Discovery Channel from 2002 to 2006, was developed and produced by Thom Beers of Original Productions. Its success spawned an entire genre of automotive-based television shows. The team behind the massive hit is back to once again challenge some of the most talented builders and designers in the country.
The first episode in the new MG: MOTOR CITY series will, appropriately, return to the roots of the automotive industry in Detroit and feature a Model T the car that started the revolution. The challenge? Turn the antique “Tin Lizzie” into a “Gasser” a term born in the 1950’s when people modified their cars, turning ordinary Fords and Chevys into street legal drag racers. These Gasser cars were designs that, to this day, continue to inspire and impact the world of hot rodding and customizing.
MG: MOTOR CITY is produced for Discovery Channel by Original Productions, a FremantleMedia Company. Thom Beers and Tom McMahon are executive producers. For Discovery Channel, Tim Pastore is executive producer.
