Dexter stalks his latest victim: a murderer so vile he could only be a used-car salesman. Dexter finds the man’s smooth-talking charm and effortless lying are things that he himself is lacking these days. In fact, Dexter’s inability to lie to Rita about his midnight activities has caused her to think that he’s a drug addict, and if he doesn’t commit to a 12-step program to deal with his addiction, she threatens to leave him.

While pretending to be a drug addict, Dexter gets an N.A. sponsor to please Rita. But when the sponsor turns out to be a beautiful woman who may have more in common with Dexter, Rita is not happy. Things get worse for Rita when her estranged mother comes for a visit. Meanwhile, Dexter must find a way to lead the all-too-smart FBI Agent Lundy, now working with Miami Metro PD, off his trail.

Dexter discovers the man who killed his mother, before his young eyes, is still alive. But when Dexter finds his mother’s murderer, his killer urges push him back to the knife’s edge.

Dexter is none too pleased to discover a copy-cat killer has started his own attempt at vigilante serial murder in Miami. He is even less pleased to learn the new killer claims to be inspired by the “Bay Harbor Butcher.” As Dexter sets out to stop the imposter, he finds himself drawn into the arms of Lila. When Rita discovers the truth, it could be the end of their relationship.

A written manifesto from the “Bay Harbor Butcher” sends the Special Task Force in charge of capturing the killer into chaos. But things start to spiral downward for Dexter as Lila’s influence begins to take its toll on Dexter’s personal life.
