Legendary find? Or just my overactive mind? See this is what happens when you watch too much Lost. Your brain goes into sensory overload looking for clues. I was watching another hilarious episode of How I Met Your Mother tonight and just as it ended I thought hmmm something looks familiar at Stella’s apartment. Then it hit me. The kids letter we’ve seen before. So what are the odds Ted’s kids in the future have the same letter? What do you think? Did I just figure out that Stella is the mother? The picture doesn't do my HiDef TV image I was looking at justice, but rest assured it's the same kids letter in both places 22 years apart. Look inside the green boxes in the photo below.

I agree with it being the same letter but I wonder if this has happened before with items. Perhaps to save money they used some of the same stuff in different scenes. Could have been an oversight. But if this is true Im afraid this is going to be the end of the show.

I think Mother will be Stella's sister. AND I think she is the girl he bumped into on St. Patricks Day at the bar. It was too much of a random thing to not have it come back.

She cant be the mother cause 1 the daughters hair isnt blond anymore (ok that couldve changed) and 2 because there is not 5+ years difference between the brother and sister and 3 then telling the story the his kids would ultimately mean she'd find out that teds not her father, sounds like a killer to the show is it ends like that...

No way it's a coincidence. The previous episode "The Goat" made a very casual reference to the fact that Robin will be living with Ted again by next year, so there are still some developments to come, and it may not be a direct line from Stella to motherhood. (And if it is, I doubt her current daughter is meant to be the daughter in 2030 -- too old.) Great find! Even if it doesn't make her the mom, it means something!

It could be a clever clue left by the writers or maybe someone was too lazy to make a new one and just recycled the other prop? I dont think we'll know for sure until we're told and I bet it hasn't been decided yet.

she was at the St Patricks day party not the thanks giving party. and she cannot possibly be the mother else he would have said already "that is how i met your mother" as that is the name of the show not "how i met, pursued, dated and impregnated your mother". i also (unfortunatly) think that it isnt her sister or any other significant family member tht is the mother as then he would have referred to her as aunty stella (like he did with robin). this (again unfortunatly) would seem to suggest tht she will not be around wen the kids are born else she would be an aunty

I think its going to be Stella's sister b/c : 1- the daughter is too old; 2 - stella said that the last time she went out was to a lame party on st. patrick's day, meaning that they could have been at the same party, but the girl that ted bumbed into was a brunette, not a blonde like Stella. ALSO- the the kids are brunettes & that random girl at the party was a brunette & t.v. shows often re-use props in different scenes w/o thinking about it, but if it is the same letter, & was on purpose i bet its a letter from Stella's sister to Stella. These upcoming episodes/seasons are gonna be awsome

Unlikely, I think - not only because it's so plausible that it's a re-used prop, but also because I can't see Sarah Chalke signing on for long enough to see her through to the end of HIMYM...especially when she's going back into full time filming on Scrubs. Either way though, looking forward to seeing Stella return soon...great chemistry!

in regards to the kids in the future both being brunettes, i say that argument scientifically doesnt hold much weight because after all brown hair is a dominant gene over the blonde recessive gene and ted after all had dark hair. 2 the kids in the future are beiing told the story of how their dad met their mom stellas daughter wouldnt need to hear that story because she lived it so i argue that stella is the mom and the two kids in the future are both ted and stellas kids.3 i am nervous that they may be ending the show soon bc it maybe cancelled so its highly plausible that now towards the end of its 3rd and possible final season they are revealing the highly anticipated mother which will also allow sarah chalke time to go refilm more scrubs if that crappy show is indeed what they are bringing back..

I don't believe that it was the mother, first of all, the writers wouldn't have made it that obvious, and when she says she was at that party, it was most likely just a red herring while the memory that Ted's future wife was at that party was hot in everyone's mind to make make them believe Stella was the future wife. The fact that Sarah Chalke is going back to film scrubs full time doesn't mean anything though, as scrubs is in ti's final series. But as HIMYM is struggling to keep it's head above water (despite the fact it's legendary) they might get canceled, and put them together as a final episode!!!

I will have to disagree here, to me i believe that twenty-two years later the daughter would not look like she is a teenager. Stella's Daughter is already in 3rd grade. which would make her thirty by now. Unless this the guy and girl are both Ted's and Stella's kids. But I think that they would have mentioned a sister or something.
Also Scrubs may be picked up by ABC for another season.

Ok, did anyone think that his children, being teenagers, could dye their hair? I mean, Stella isn't a real light blonde in the first place! See, the roots. And her daughter has light brown hair. I was born to parents who both had dark hair. It can happen. I actually forgot about the mother plotline of this show, I think I was so sick of the red herrings, which I know have to occur because of the show's name! I assume the producers will wait until the show has jumped the shark to reveal it. My theory is that Stella isn't the mother due to Sarah Chalke's commitment to Scrubs, which is now going to be on ABC. If How I Met Your Mother was also on ABC, I could see her double dipping, but who knows...maybe she will come back on the show once Scrubs is done, I know there is some plot with Robin living with Ted that hasn't happened yet. Are the words "Uncle Marshall" even mentioned? Because Ted speaks in the future of "Aunt Lily" but I can't remember if Marshall is quoted as being the uncle, will they still be married at the time? The letter is a good clue, because in the past, it is by itself, but in the future, it is moved with other childhood items put on it, so it would be a simple letter before, but added to in the future.

There was an entire episode about Ted keeping stuff from his old girlfriends. It annoyed Robin a lot and I think that's the case here. If not that, then it's a reused prop. Another red herring, IMO.

Good find, though i think that the girl Ted bumped into during the St Patrick's day party could be the girl coz that scene doesnt seem to fit in anywhere in the plot. either its a random scene or an important scene made to look random.

I agree with everyones ideas about the girl he bumped into, it seems very odd, and seems like it should have some importance. Though i also think its unlikely that she will turn out to be the mother after looking at her. We shall just have to wait and see.

and like many other people have said - stella said she was at A party on st paddys.. there are fkloads of clubs/parties etc. what makes you think that it was the same party...

I think the letters are examples of parents keeping letters from their kids (hand print and stuff in front of the 2030 letter makes it look like kid keepsakes, plus the kid-like writing on the letters). Apparently Stella kept a letter from her daughter, and Ted and his wife kept letters from their kids (two letters in the frame) ... maybe he got the idea from seeing Stella's letter ... maybe he is married to Stella's sister and keeping kid letters is a family tradition. If any of this is true I have to hand it to the writers for paying a lot of attention to small details!

I must say, congrats about the letter, it's not easy to spot. But I think that's also the reason why they reused that prop. They make tons of mistakes in sitcoms that I really find it hard to believe and this one is quite insignificant. (In one episode, future Ted reminds us about the slap bet and shows first 3 slaps of Marshall's random life-time slaps but first slap shown is actually the "first" slap of his, not the first of his 5 random slaps. That's a huge mistake in my opinion.) Besides I don't think the mother would be revealed on the 4th season. I think they try to manipulate the audience so that we will think that the mother is Stella, so they gave us facts like St Patrick's Day similarity, proposal after "life-changing" accident etc. Also daughter of Stella couldn't fit in the future no matter how hard I imagine unless she disappears somehow. I always thought the mother will be the girl he bumped on St. Patrick's Day. Else why would they shoot that scene?

I believe that names are the most important thing in this sitcom 'cause the kids would easily notice it when the Ted met their mother

I agree with most of you I don't think Stella is the mother because she has a daughter who is 8 in 2008, the actors that play ted's two kids are 18 and 16 which means they were born in 2012 and 2014 when Lucy was 12. Also another thing I found out from the Scrubs creator that scrubs season 8 finishes filming before how i met your mother starts filming season 4 so with Sarah Chalke, scrubs is not going to be any problem when filming how i met your mother episodes. I think that there's a chance that Stella could be the mother, on another website they show all the pictures of things that flashed through ted's eyes and at the end of the first flashes, second last picture shows ted at the alter with the wire wearing the wedding dress, with marshall as the best man, then the last 2 pictures in the second set of flashes shows ted kissing stella after the ten sessions episode and Stella standing at the door in the no sex for 5 years episode, that clarifies that Stella could definally be the mother. We are all going to have to watch the first 4 episodes in season 4 which is how long Sarah Chalke will be on as Stella in order to determine if she's the mother or not based apon the 2 letters in Stella's apartment and Ted's house are similar,but she doesn't mention any specific details as to what year she went to the st particks day party. Stella could very well be the mother but she can also not be the mother depending on what direstion the creators for how i met your mother want to do. The first 4 episodes in season 4 after the fantastic stella arc will determine If Sarah Chalke's character is the mother of the shows title. you will have to wait until september 22 for the season premere to start keeping very close attention to Ted and Stella's relationship to prove if she's the mother

Did anyone else notice the woman that ted bumps into while walking across the club during the st Paddys day episode. Its about half way through the episode. Why would they put that in?, a random character that he bumps into and then he says sorry and she says its ok. this woman is teds future wife, i'd bet my house on it. There is no need for it except for a future flash back.

Dear "the detective"...
people on many blogs (including mine) have been through the analysis of whether or not that was the mother...the general consensus is that the writers were screwing with us. The shoes, pants and I think someone even said the purse and shirt were different.
It's my personal belief that it's not Stella either. I think they will either never marry or marry but not last...Just my 2 cents...plus I stand by the theory that the mother's name is Tracy.

Stella is not the mother, for the simple fact that when she ditches him at the alter. They show a whole different set of kids.. in other words she would have been the mother to THOSE kids, not the ones we see every week. There is another mother brother!

u guys think the mothers name is tracy coz the kids fell for teds little joke bout the stripper right? and random chick from st patricks coz she went to the party right? ..well sure, ill admit thers like a SLIGHT possibility these theories of it being true, but look at it practically guys wat r the odds the writers arent makin mistakes in the plot?? im mean geez theyv made SO many mistakes that iv lost count! here are a few to get u thinkin (therz numerous more bt i kant remember them all atm):
1. wen ted was beggining to befriend robin, she said she wasnt into team sports (epi- slutty pumpin), but obviously she used to play hockey in canada.
2. marshall said hez never been in a fight before (episode wher ted nd barny lick the liberty bell), but obviously hes been in many- he was able to beat up the big guy ouside mcLarens due to his "experience".
3. barney was shown to be the worst driver ever who couldnt handle little if any speed (epi wher marshalls car dies), but last weeks episode, he was gettin speeding tickets all over the place!
4. barney said he only started sleeping around with women cause of his ex girlfreind Shannon dumpin him (cant recall which epi) but episode couple weeks ago says that he was only doin it to win a lame bet which occured at his school wen he was a kid!
i personally think this show is startin to fall apart.. not because of the characters, ther acting is still awesome, but cause the writers are gettin sloppy.. and theyr sloppyness could very well have had them use that letter ur on bout on two different sets.

One other small thing people seem to be forgetting is the yellow umbrella... Ted specifically says that it's significant because it's their mothers umbrella. He and Stella dated for how long? You seriously believe she never saw the umbrella and said... "hey, that's my umbrella! I left it at this St. Pat's party."
